“Dump?” Who the HELL does she think she is, driving up in her fancy Porsche and calling MY hotel a DUMP?

Daisy, who was ready to blow just a moment ago, pats the back of my hand. ‘Calm down, Sam. Don’t take this “not being a wimp” thing too far—I liked it better when you were scared of your own shadow.’

‘I was NEVER…’

Having sat down in Roger’s chair, Alan stands abruptly. ‘At the risk of disobeying “orders”, I think Hugh’s quite capable of “keeping an eye on them”. Meantime, I have work to do.’

He stalks off, obviously as incensed by Wonder Woman as I am. Angus laughs softly. ‘She’s something else, isn’t she? Miss Dawn?’

Daisy ignores him and turns to me. ‘You do see what’s happening here? Joan of Arc’s got it in for this “Scorpion” person and she plans to use us as bait.’

‘Bait?’

‘Yeah, it’s obvious. She knows the Scorpion won’t give up trying to eliminate us. We’re the cheese in Dawn’s mousetrap.’

Angus claps his hands—three times—then nods. He’s grinning. ‘I was right about the two of ye.’

He waves a hand then uses it to pick up his (rather full—I need to have a word with Colin) glass of Lagavulin. After a sip, his gaze settles on me. ‘Yer friend’s spot on—Miss Dawn won’t rest until she’s dealt with the Scorpion. Neither is she likely to balk at using unconventional tactics. Then her and Mr Roger will fly away again—which would be a pity.’

He’s lost me. ‘What would be a pity?’

Angus sucks in a huge breath, then grabs at his chest and gasps. ‘Ae my life—I must remember no tae dae that. Aye… going by what Wilf told me, it’s my impression all four of ye are cut from the same cloth. By that, I mean ye’ve all got a nicely developed sense of right and wrong. Now, I’ll be honest—my friends are no’ themselves at the moment. Recently, they lost somebody and it’s knocked them off kilter—particularly poor Mr Roger. They need a worthwhile challenge tae help them get back on track.’

Daisy rocks her head. ‘Protecting us, you mean?’

Angus scowls. ‘Aw, they’ll protect the two of ye from the Scorpion, that goes without sayin’. Nay, I’m talkin’ about yer other problem with this Glasgow gang boss. What’s his name—Gilmartin?’

Daisy stares at him incredulously, despite her own thoughts last night in the same vein. ‘What can they do about him? And why would they want to?’

Angus huffs and takes another (somewhat unappreciative, I can’t help thinking) swig of the most expensive whisky we stock. ‘Were ye no listenin’, lassie, tae what I said about right and wrong? When Miss Dawn and Mr Roger realise what’s at stake for the two of ye, there’ll be no stoppin’ them. And believe me, if them two decide tae sort Gilmartin—sorted he will be.’

Angus waves a beckoning hand (not the one holding his Lagavulin) and we both lean closer. ‘They’re furious with this “Scorpion” wifey for shooting me—but it was yon Gilmartin fella who sent her.
